The Andromeda Galaxy (M31)

At a distance of 2.2 million light years, this is the nearest large galaxy, and contains several hundred billion stars. It is very similar in appearance to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, but is estimated to contain roughly twice as many stars (and it is larger than our galaxy). All the individual foreground stars in this pic are in our own galaxy
; looking past them, we see beautiful Andromeda and 2 satellite galaxies .
